Shaping up Summer Plans (aka Blog Summer Salad)

All right, so much for the bad joke yesterday. Today you get blog salad a la Ms. Zipdrive.

Crap. My brother phoned today to say that he and his girlfriend are changing their May 2004 wedding date to July 20, 2003. The reason? They decided they can’t afford the fancy wedding with all the attendants and the dinner. Oh, and they don’t want to wait. Instead, it’ll be a smaller, more intimate affair – a morning wedding on the beach, followed by a brunch. In order to go, that means Mel and I have to work on getting plane tickets, getting time off from work and finding someone to stay at our house to take care of the critters. Much sooner than we’d planned. This is not the first time they’ve tried to move the date up. Perhaps I’ll wait a week before making any plans, just to see if anything changes.

Kiss and Aerosmith are on a double bill in August at a popular amusement park ampitheatre about 45 minutes away from us. Mel and one of her friends are ecstatic and can’t wait. I plan to pass… I can think of better things to do with $55. Hmmm… I might be interested in seeing The Dead with Bob Dylan. I’ve seen The Dead several times (when Jerry Garcia was alive) but never Bob Dylan. Or maybe the Eagles, I’ve never seen them. Santana? Nah, saw them last summer. Maybe I’ll go to Toronto to see Steely Dan. And there’s always Indigo Girls at a very small outdoor ampitheatre with inexpensive seats. Check. I’ll see them again.

One summer concert that has me reminiscing is a show that includes Journey, Styx and REO Speedwagon together. Not that I’d be interested in going now. I remember seeing Journey and Styx as a very stoned teenager up in the nosebleed section of the arena. I wonder if Steve Perry still sounds like a strangled cat.

In a suprise move last week – I must have been doing something right at the time – the wife informed me that we would be going to Pride this year. I nearly fell out of my chair. Getting her to go last year wasn’t easy. As predicted, she had a pretty good time once she got there. Most of her friends were at the parade and will be there again this year, so we’ll definitely do that. Perhaps we’ll even take part in the dyke march and women’s dance that follows. Last year we went to the dance for a while, it was okay. Mel said we should invite my mother to the parade… I dunno about that. I’m not sure my mom is ready for prime time. We’ll see.

 1. I think Steve Perry does, but he doesn’t tour with the group anymore. Instead Journey got themselves a Steve Perry-look-a-like. I think his name is Steve Sherry or something crazy like that.

 2. The wedding thing is sooo weird — my sister was supposed to get married May 2004 and moved it to May 2003 for monetary reasons as well. The Princess and I obviously aren’t there, we couldn’t get the time off from work and plane tickest that quickly. She lives in Washington state and we’re in Florida — and we HATE to fly.

We’re going to some Pride happenings this year also — the first time The Princess has decided she wants to go and feels safe enough to do so. Should be fun.

 3. That brings back memories. Styx was the first concert I ever saw as a fourteen year old in Corpus Christi, TX back in 1976. Much fun for a Catholic school girl! .
